tablature - a system of writing music for mostly stringed instruments and drums. The horizontal lines represent the strings or parts of the drum kit. For strings, the top line is always the first string. The numbers on the string lines are frets to be played.
technique - the physical aspect of playing an instrument. The goal being having the ability to express a musical idea. Development of speed, flexibility, endurance and a wide range of tonal values are desired.
time signature - on the staff, after the clef sign and the key signature, is the time signature. The top number tells you how many beats are in each measure, and the bottom tells you the value of each beat. The most common time signatures are 4/4 = four quarter beats per measure; 3/4 = three quarter beats per measure; 6/8 = six eighth beats per measure; 2/4 = two quarter beats per measure; and cut time, which is the same as 4/4 except the eighth notes are played as triplets and gives the melody a swing feel. Cut time is denoted by a capital C with a vertical line through the middle.
tuning - the practice of assigning specific tones to each string or note. The universal vibration of 440 cycles per second is used to designate the note "A".
third - refers to an interval, relative to the root note. The most common use of the term is in reference to a harmony within a chord structure. Do is the root, Mi the third and Sol is the fifth.
